RIFFOCITY – Disciples of the Storm review

RIFFOCITY – Disciples of the Storm
Independent
It seems that the Greek metal scene develops quite quickly lately and on good foundations. The quality of musicians that play metal has risen and the technology also helps them to compose their music easier and on professional standards. RIFFOCITY for example were formed a couple of years back (in 2013) in Serres (a town in North Greece) and they have already released their first official 5 track EP under the title “Disciples of the Storm” which I am about to present to you here.

THE COVER: Thrash metal is definitely a violent sound and when you listen to it violent things come into your mind, like for example natural catastrophes. So I think that the cover of this EP got it right both for the sound of the band and the title of their first release. On a desert plain and in the middle of a tornado you can see a black hooded person holding a staff. He seems like commanding the whole destruction that surrounds him. On his feet you can see human skeletons and one of them stands on his knees. On the background you can see some more black hooded figures, a mountain and some buildings. It is a cover with many details.
MUSICAL STYLE: Well, when you name your band RIFFOCITY then it is obvious that you create music based on riffs. Actually thrash metal is a sound that is based on riffs and on that RIFFOCITY does a very good job. The band sounds aggressive and yet their songs have a melodic touch too (without losing their aggressive edge at any point). As for their influences, well I think that SLAYER play a major role and in general their sound is more U.S. thrash metal oriented. They also have a few modern touches that reminded me of THE HAUNTED too. Finally the production is good and helps you listen to all the instruments without reducing the aggressive character of RIFFOCITY’s sound.
CONCLUSION: The band states that they released this EP with the hope to attract the interest of a label. Well, I think that this is possible since a lot of work has been done here and on a professional level. As for us the fans, well this is a release we will enjoy listening to since it includes some good thrashing metal tunes.
